Great post! I’m about to leave on vacation with my sister and it’s a great reminder to prepare for everything before you travel :-)
I’m such a fan of packing light BUT packing smart. I can’t be buying everything where we travel because that would snowball our cost pretty quickly.
I’m gonna also try your idea to bring snacks with us – that’s actually a pretty darn good idea!

    Thanks!

Great list! One thing I like to do is be flexible on my destination and stay on top of Groupon/Living Social deals. For instance, if I wanted to go to the Caribbean, I would monitor the deals that come through without being tied to a specific property. If you can be flexible, you can save a ton of money!

I have been pretty fortunate that I traveled pretty extensively while on active duty in the US Army and I travel quite a bit in my current job, but for those who don’t have a chance to travel at the expense of their employer, some great tips here.

I’ve heard there’s a sweet spot for buying tickets…buy too early or late, and the prices might be high. Although they might have last minute deals. I like to buy early because I can’t deal with the fluctuations in price…it’s like the stock market. I definitely bring my own snacks and an empty bottle when I fly (I feel up the bottle at the water fountain after I get past security). Traveling off-season is a great idea, but those with kids often have to go based on the school schedule…and when they’re free, it’s usually peak season!

Yes, kids can definitely make you travel on peak season because of their school schedule, but one can still do other money saving tips above, excluding traveling off-season, with their kids, right? :)

Nice list of ideas! I’m going to have to add one though – learning about travel hacking and traveling for nearly free. There is nothing else comparable.

I love traveling so these tips will come in handy for my next big adventure :) I think it’s so important that people understand that travel doesn’t have to be expensive. I’ve had holidays that have been cheaper per day than my general living expenses.

We save money on travel by doing a bit of credit card chruning. Nothing like those churning experts who go through 10-20 cards a year but it’s still enough to take a flight every year or every other year. That saved us about $2000 last year when we went to Japan.
